It was 11:15 on a sunny Wednesday morning. The temperature was 6 degrees and the windchill was 15 below zero as I walked across the parking lot toward the entrance to the hospital. That was when I heard a small crash by the building. Not a big one, but something had fallen. I looked over and saw that the sun was actually melting the icicles on the building and they were falling 2-stories to the ground.
I should tell you that I am a weather fanatic. I am fascinated by weather extremes, especially winter weather. This recent cold snap was sudden and intense. We were sitting at 48 degrees with rain at 7 am the previous Sunday and by that evening we were down to 9 degrees with a fresh inch of snow on the ground. Everything about winter weather I find fascinating.
On this day, it was not the winter weather that I found fascinating. Instead it was the power of sun over this incredible cold snap. It was amazing to see the frozen icicles collapse to the ground despite temperatures that were better served for the arctic.
As I saw that icicle collapse to the ground I thought, the power of the sun is amazing! And that was when my mind went immediately to the power of THE son. Despite the darkness, despite the cruel impacts of sin, it is incredible to realize the power of the Son. Jesus is able to overcome the depths and despair of sin.
I Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (ESV) We are able to receive victory over the power of sin because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Romans 8:37 & 39 says, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us… nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus is able to make us conquerors over sin because He finished the work. The power of THE Son is not only incredible, but it is powerful and life changing. If you think about it, the next time you are walking on a frigid, sunny day, think about the power the sun has over the bone-chilling cold. That is nothing compared to the impact Jesus has on our life once we turn to him. Old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). I thank God for the power of THE Son.
